We're used to spy stories and the protagonists being male but this is a different spin with the protagonist being female and a mother with a questionable husband and more questionable friends. It could have all veer into the usual pot-boiler, brain-twisting page turner but perhaps because of the author's expat sojourns in Luxembourg, there's a european sensibility and sheen to the plot which makes it sit well with John Le Carre's more recent novels.
The denouncement at the end of the novel is a tad breathless with all the loose ends tied up in 30 pages. But it does leave an opening for what is, hopefully a new book.
Highly enjoyable.
