Haven't no knowledge of "The Giver" - I did know there was a Jonas in that book, I kept an open mind and read this within a day and was moved but mystified by it as well. There were elements of "The Handmaid's Tale" and any/every dystopian fiction (Brave New World) in the first 1/3 of the book and then it changes gear to a more naturalistic setting after the lead was washed up on a shore and then it went supernatural with the Trademaster (I still have no idea what that was about)
I have been forcing myself to not read books in the order they were written (takes too long to wait for books to be returned from the library) and it is proving to be a boon as the brain is working hard to make linkages as I read the books. Of course it might not be a good idea to attempt this with thick novels.
